An information session on the George River Caribou herd took place at the Nunatsiavut Government building last night at 7 pm.
A packed NG boardroom heard presentations from NL Senior Wildlife Biologist John Pisapio and NL Fish and Wildlife Chief of Staff Sheldon Anstey.
During a highly detailed presentation, Pisapio revealed that the NL government has decided to extend the George River caribou ban to 2017.
Pisapio also stated that if the decline of the herd continues at its current pace, there may only be a few hundred animals left in 5 years.
Anstey talked about a case currently before the courts in which Innu are charged with hunting caribou around Sheshatshiu in March of 2013.
Despite many comments from the audience to the contrary, Anstey maintained that NL Fish and Wildlife are cracking down on anyone illegally hunting caribou.
The evening ended on a positive note with Pisapio showing a heartwarming video of the George River caribou herd.
