The Makkovik sky was spotted with hundreds of Chinese lanterns last evening in tribute to Burton Winters.
Burton’s mother, Paulette Rice, says she was overwhelmed with emotion during the tribute to her late son.
Rice says the tribute began with the lighting of 14 lanterns by Burton’s family.
The number of lanterns represented each year of the boy’s life.
The rest of the community followed with the lighting of their lanterns.
Family, supporters and friends of the boy’s family donated enough Chinese lanterns to provide one to every resident of Makkovik.
The sky was filled with the lights which were even seen as far away as Postville.
Rice says they plan to light 14 Chinese lanterns each year on February 1 in memory of her son.
