Makkovik Fish Plant Receives Funds from Province

The Provincial Government Support has put funds towards the Makkovik Fish plant to do some upgrades for the Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative Society Limited.

Keith Watts is the General Manager for Torngat Fish Co-op.

He says they have received funds from the provincial government, and that this has been in the works for a while now.

The Torngat Fish Co-op will seek ways to increase efficiency and output at its crab and turbot plant in Makkovik.

Watts says Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced yesterday that $9,332 is to help the company explore process improvements and consider new technology to make the plant more competitive.

With these funds from the Provincial Government, the Torngat Fish Co-op aims to make the plant leaner and more cost effective to maintain the long term success.

He says the funding is provided through the Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program, which supports research into improved approaches to harvesting, processing, and marketing seafood.

The Torngat Fish Co-op will use the funding to engage the Marine Institute’s Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources in evaluating production at its Makkovik plant.

The Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation is also supporting the project with funding and oversight; the Torngat Fish Co-op greatly appreciates the Provincial Government’s support for their efforts to make their crab and turbot plant as efficient and competitive as possible.
