Coast Guard Constructing Helicopter Landing Pads in Labrador

The Canadian Coast Guard Atlantic is constructing 45 new helicopter landing pads in Labrador.

The landing pads will be constructed over the next three years along the coast of Labrador.

According to a Government of Canada press release, the landing pads will ensure safe access for Canadian Coast Guard staff, and faster year round accessibility to land-based navigational aids in remote areas.

The pads will be constructed of concrete, pressure-treated timber, or gravel, depending on the terrain at each site.

Construction crews will operate from the Canadian Coast Guard ship George R. Pearkes with Coast Guard helicopter support.

Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, made the announcement.

Shea says, “This investment in Canadian Coast Guard infrastructure is important since it will improve safety and give better access for technical crews who have to service navigational aids in remote areas of the Labrador Coast.”

The total cost of the project is 4.6 million dollars.
