Inuit Health Report Released By ITK (Audio)

A comprehensive report has been released by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (or ITK) on Social Determinants of Inuit Health.

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, and include the health system.

According to an ITK news release, Inuit experience comparatively lower life expectancies, high rates of infant mortality and the highest suicide rates of any population group in the country.

The Social Determinants report has been designed to support public health activities across the Inuit regions in Canada.

Terry Audla is the President of ITK.

He says that the report is also intended to support government organizations concerned with Inuit health.

He adds that one of the goals of the program is to find out how to manage Inuit health in a more holistic manner.

According to Audla, food security, housing, mental wellness, and health care are some of the areas that can be improved.
