Nain Kayaker Cuts Trip Short

Nain adventurer, Noah Nochasak, has decided to cut his expedition short.

Nochasak has already paddled the approximate distance of 192 kilometres from Nain to Hebron.

He was planning to paddle the rest of the distance to Saglek.

Levi Nochasak, Noah’s father, says he received a call from his son Wednesday evening.

He says Noah decided not to attempt to make it to Saglek because he wouldn’t have a ride home to Nain.

Noah will be returning from Hebron by speedboat.

The Kayaker will leave his self-made vessel in Hebron.

Levi says his son is a little disappointed that he never made it to his final destination.

But it’s safe to say that Noah can hold his head high for what he’s already accomplished.

Almost buddy, almost! At least you’re trying and attempting to keep our tradition alive. Unlike myself and 99% of our people. Sure we all go and get our caribou, seal, fish, wood, birds, wolves, bears etc. But who in Labrador goes out of their way to construct traditional means of transportation…and actually use it? Hence the “99%”. Anyway, way to go Noah, you did good.

If you were to trace out the water kayaking route that I used you’ll see it’s about 300 km. I didn’t go Base Camp because they said I couldn’t get a ride back with them and I’d work the hardest to get up there. Just because I don’t come with a company, title or paycheque doesn’t make me second class. The deeper you reach into our culture the more people back out. Thanks, I had good trip overall and learned alot. Hopefully more people challenge themselves to distance kayaking so we can share with each other.
