Narwhal Tusk Being Kept As a Souvenir

The tusk of a narwhal is a rare trophy that not many people in the world possess.

One Nunatsiavut hunter has joined those few following the rare harvest of a narwhal outside of Nain last week.

John Andersen was one of a group of local hunters who captured the animal in Edward’s Cove.

He says he’s keeping the tusk as a souvenir.

Andersen says the tusk is 16 inches long and weighs approximately one pound.

It was removed from the animal with a carpenter’s saw and then boiled in water to remove the surrounding bone.

Andersen says the ivory appears worn in the front section.
