Number of Polar Bears Harvested Rises to Four in Record Time

It’s shaping up to be another successful polar bear season for Nunatsiavut.

Another three animals have been harvested since the first we reported earlier this week.

Ross Flowers of Hopedale made use of a polar bear license on Wednesday.

Flowers says he made the kill in less than two hours after beginning the hunt.

He tracked down the animal around 32 kilometres north of Hopedale.

The female polar bear was around 450 pounds and measured around 6 feet, 4 inches.

Flowers used a .25-06 rifle to take down the animal.

He was waiting on a feed of polar bear to cook for his lunch when we contacted him on Friday morning.

Flowers is planning to sell the fur to any interested buyers.

Two more Nain hunters got their polar bears recently as well.

Willie Fox harvested his animal on Thursday around Green Island, outside of Nain.

His stepson, Derrick McLean, made use of his license at Mugford.

The two are expected to return to Nain with polar bears in tow on Sunday.

The latest two kills bring the total number of polar bears harvested by Nain hunters this year to three.

That means the quota is filled for that community.

The kill in Hopedale means only two license remains for that community.

Each of the other Nunatsiavut communities still has two licenses still available.

That may very well change after this weekend though.

Jim Goudie, the Nunatsiavut Government’s Wildlife Manager, says a number of hunters from different communities are currently holding licenses and are planning to search for their polar bear this weekend.

He adds that this is the fastest ever that this many bears have been harvested in this amount of time since the distribution of licenses began.

He says this could be another polar bear season for the record books following last year’s record-setting season.
