Rigolet Implements Ban On Plastic Bags

Rigolet’s ban on plastic bags came into effect over the weekend.

AngajukKak Charlotte Wolfrey says the ban came into effect on July 1.

It is part of Rigolet’s initiative to become a more environmentally-conscious community.

The Northern Store and Rigolet Inuit Community Government have provided each household with three reusable bags.

The Northern Store will continue to sell plastic bags for 25 cents each.

She hopes the sale of bags will be completely phased out once the community transitions into the bag ban.

The money made through the sale of the plastic bags will go towards a community cause.

Rigolet is following in the footsteps of Nain where a similar ban came into effect in 2009.
