Makkovik Plant No Longer Accepting Crab

The crab fishery in Makkovik has wrapped up earlier than expected.

Junior Andersen, the plant’s Manager, says the vessels harvesting the crab returned home on July 26.

He says the crab in the area was hard to come by and the product they did find wasn’t of the greatest quality.

Only a total of 404, 507 pounds of crab were landed this season.

The community is now looking towards turbot.

Three vessels have arrived in Makkovik to harvest turbot for the plant.

They were heading to their fishing grounds on Monday morning.

The plant expects to process turbot for about a month.

Things are beginning to slow down at the Nain plant as well.

That facility has almost reached its quota of 20,000 pounds of char.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the plant’s Office Clerk.

She believes that they will only accept char for another couple of days.

Only 2, 500 pounds of char remains in their quota.

The plant has been accepting char for two weeks.

15 licensed commercial char harvesters have been landing their catches at the plant.

There are 23 people processing the catches.
