Nain Blogger Calling for Improvements to Nutrition North Program (Audio)

The Nutrition North program hasn’t been met with a very warm reception since being introduced in 2011.

The program provides subsidies on healthy foods to northern communities.

People from across the north have been protesting both the program and the high cost of foods.

Brian Williams, a blogger who operates the website Nain Bay, has been following the effectiveness of Nutrition North since it was introduced.

He feels the federal government isn’t doing enough to ensure that the savings are being passed on to consumers.

He says items like milk, which is subsidized by both the federal and provincial governments, are sold at much higher prices than they should be.

Consumers in Nunatsiavut should be paying a price similar to their Upper Lake Melville counterparts with the double subsidy.

Williams says we’re paying around $2 more for the necessity here in Nain.

He’s calling on all levels of government to do more to combat high food prices in this region.
