Slow Season Means Layoffs at Makkovik Fish Plant

The slow season at the Makkovik fish plant has resulted in a number of layoffs.

Junior Andersen, the plant’s Production Manager, says their number of staff has been cut in half.

There are currently 28 people processing the catches being landed at the plant.

There was nearly double that amount at the beginning of the season.

There are three fishing crews harvesting turbot in the area.

They’re expected to harvest turbot for about another week.

Another vessel, the Newfoundland Mariner, is also fishing turbot in the area.

That vessel has the ability to partly process and freeze their catches on board which means even less work for the plant’s employees.
