Census Show Innu Use Native Language More then Inuit

The latest census profile on languages used in NFLD and Labrador has come out.

The 2011 census shows a greater number of Innu use their native language, more so than Inuit.

Of the 2035 people who identified their mother tongue as Innu, 1,875 say that it’s the language they speak most at home.

In contrast, of the 635 Inuit people who identify Inuktitut as their mother tongue, only 160 say they use it most often at home.

Unfortunately, the statistics do not show the breakdown of ages of those who still speak their native language.
