NG Calling for New Shipping Vessel

Nunatsiavut Government has put out a press release today, as concerns continue to rise as shipping season nears an end.

NG is calling on the Government of NL to ensure that all freight is shipped to northern Labrador communities before the season comes to a close.

Darryl Shiwak is the First Minister of NG and acting Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

NG has made numerous requests, in writing and verbally, for another vessel to complement the MV Astron.

Shiwak says “It’s a crucial time in the year when residents and businesses in Nunatsiavut are completely dependent on goods and supplies for the winter.”

Shiwak is concerned the freight will be left behind.

“And based on our experiences all are concerned that this will be the case.” he says.

Shiwak adds that “This has been one of the worst years ever for the marine service.”

He says the Astron has been doing a good job, but if that vessel breaks down, essential supplies may not be delivered.

So Shiwak thinks that replacing the Northern Ranger with a new vessel is the best solution.
