The Aboriginal governments and Nations of Quebec and Labrador recently announced the creation of the Ungava Peninsula Caribou Aboriginal Round Table.
The round table was created with the goal of preserving caribou in Labrador and Quebec.
Adamie Delisle Alaku of the Makivik Corporation is a Co-Chair of the newly-formed round table.
He would like to see Aboriginal people work out their own solutions to the decline of caribou by working together, without government interference like hunting bans.
Alaku says the Innu refuse to support a ban on caribou hunting, but it’s hard to tell fellow First Nation’s people not to hunt.
He does mention a hunting ban worked for the Porcupine caribou herd in Alaska.
