The Innu Nation hopes the inquiry into the treatment of children care will be the beginning of the end of the trauma.
The inquiry into the Treatment, Experiences and Outcomes of Innu in the child protection System was launched last Friday, April 29.
It comes almost a year after Commissioner Chair was named to lead it, and 5 years after it was announced.
Innu Nation Deputy Grand Chief, Mary Anne Nui said its about stopping the cycle of generational trauma.
She said it’s a new beginning for the generation, the goal is to stop passing it down and putting them through what their parents and grandparents went through.
Commissioner Chair Igloliorte, who will be assisted by Co-commissioner, Anastasia Qupee and Dr. Mark Devine said that it is important for everyone acknowledge the failings of the system.
He said all parties acknowledged the longstanding issue of not appreciating issues of those failures of Innu Nation Children, their families, their communities, and their culture, the inquiry will help guide the Innu as they work self- fall.
Igloliorte who also oversaw the recent into ground, search inquiry, said public meetings will start in the fall.
In the meantime, there will be meetings with community leaders, while the parties prepare and review legal documents for presentation at the inquiry.
