This year marks 22 years of the annual Heritage Fair in Labrador.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Fairs Program began in 1997 as part of a national initiative to bring history to life for students.
We spoke with the Grade 8 teacher who organized the event, Ms. Kristine Nolan.
Nolan says students from the grade 8 class showcased 8 projects at the gym.
Students present their projects at school fairs and every year a student is picked to attend to the Regional Heritage Fair in Happy Valley Goose Bay.
Six regional fairs are held each year in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This year the judges for the fair were: Sarah Leo and Brenda Jararuse.
The Regional Heritage Fair will take place April 9-10th at the Northern Cross Church in HVGB.
The students who are picked will participant in a variety of workshops; which include hands on activities such as arts and crafts and snow shoeing and they will display their heritage fair and they’ll be getting judged for various awards.
Nolan says this year’s theme is Labrador Heroes and Villains of Newfoundland and Labrador past.
And the lucky student who was picked at the JHMS this year was Garnet Nochasak
Who showcased a story about his Grandfather Eli Merkuratsuk.
2nd place student went to Tristan Denniston who did a story on Martha Joshua – who is a Survivor of the Spanish Flu and third place was Mahala Brake (Pirate Peter Easton).
