The Nunatsiavut Government had 25 moose licenses for harvest by beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Lands Claims agreement for 2023-2024 hunting season.
We spoke with Todd Broomfield, the Director of Renewable Resources at Nunatsiavut Government.
The Moose Season opened on September 18, 2023, and will remain open until March 7, 2024.
The harvest is an ongoing initiative of the Nunatsiavut Government to provide an alternate source of country food for Labrador Inuit communities, initiated following the provincial ban on harvesting George River caribou enacted in 2013.
Broomfield says they handed out 19 local moose licenses on the north coast.
One moose was harvested in Nain.
He adds they filled 31 licenses in Grose Mourne, they started their hunt on October 18 to October 20, 2023.
Right now, the moose meat is being processed in Cormack newfoundland.
Once the butcher is completed and processed the moose meat will be distributed and they hope to have the meat on the Kamutik W.
