The Native Spirit Youth Centre is an arm of the Rigolet Inuit Community Government. Holly Flowers is the coordinator, and she briefly updated us here at the OKâlaKatiget.
They provide children and youth after-school/evening programming from Monday to Friday during the school year; and daytime programming over the summer months.
There are three slots of grades K-3, grades 4-6 and grades 7-12 with a range of 60-80% attendance rate of each group.
Some activities they offered so far this year has been, a movie day with stuffed animals and milkshakes, native games night, escape room, spa night and a “kick off to summer” dance serving poutine and smoothies.
The parties are held each Easter, Halloween, and Christmas; usually partnering with the Recreation Department.
They recently have been approved for funding to purchase new gaming devices such as, a virtual reality system, gaming consoles and chairs, iPads.
They also offer culturally based activities such as traditional cooking, story telling, parka making and celebrations in honour of local traditional artists.
