Moose License update with Todd Broomfield

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for the Nunatsiavut Government.

Broomfield spoke briefly with us this morning giving an update on the Moose License.

Broomfield states that the Moose Hunting season opened September 18, 2023, and closes March 7, 2024.

Broomfield mentioned that there are 19 licenses in total, with 7 Moose License for Nain, and 2 each for Hopedale, Postville, Makkvovik, Rigolet, Upperlake Melville, Canadian Consistency.

Broomfield say’s that, as far as he’s aware, they are not filled yet.

Broomfield will be travelling to Gorse Morne to attend the meetings for the non-profit licenses, and will be giving us another detailed update in the coming weeks.

JHMS School pictures being done today in Nain

Memories NL School photographs are being held at the Nain Jens Haven Memorial School this week.

For students in Nain, school photos are being taken on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday Morning October 17 school photos will be done for Grades Kindergarten to Grade 3, and on Tuesday afternoon it will be for Grades 4 to 11.

On Wednesday October 18, 2023, the grade students will be holding their Grad pictures.

Baby, Group, and family photos are to be pre-paid and available after school today, Monday and Tuesday.

Passports/FAC and Indian Status photos are $30 also available after school today Monday and Tuesday until 5pm.

Please choose a background you prefer and send your choice to the school before the photo is taken, Cards were also sent home with students.

LATP Safety training bundle starts today in Hopedale

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership office in Hopedale are holding their Safety bundle training today.

We spoke with Georgia Abel the NG Career Counsellor for Hopedale.

Abel says those who applied for the safety bundle training, training will be held today Monday October 16th at the Nanuk Center.

Clients are asked to please attend to all safety training.

The camp attendant training is postponed until further notice.

She says right now they have 12 confirmed applicants enrolled for the Safety Training bundle and LATP are still looking for 3 more clients to take part.

Training is held by DMC and will finish on Friday October 20, 2023.

Abel says they have 10 applicants who applied for the Camp Attendant training, and they are looking for 10 applicants to take part, seats are limited.

She adds that Clients can come by to her office for resume and cover letters.

Abel says her Office is always open for people to pick up applications or to find out about LATP services.

Coastal DHSD programs

We spoke with Hopedale DHSD Public health nurse Kim Dicker this morning, she says that the Vaccine Clinic will be on going this week on October 17th, Tuesday @9am-11:30am and again at 1pm- 4pm.

For Wednesday it will be open again from 1pm-4pm, then later in the evening @6-8. For Thursday, it is open from 6pm-8pm.

Anyone who wants these influenza and Covid-19 vaccines you are asked to go to the DHSD building.

Dicker mentions that for next week October 24th, from Tuesday to Thursday it will be held at the same time, to be reminded of the times, you can call Kim at 933-3894.

We also spoke with Marilyn Baikie Public health nurse in Rioglet,
Baikie has the dates for the influenza vaccines, time being on the 31st of this month, and for Nov the 1st to the 2nd. She asks that if you would like to have your flu vaccines, you can call the DHSD office to book an appointment @947-3328.

She says that for the 1st and 2nd of November, the appointments will be throughout the day and evenings. We will get another update from Baikie for when the Covid-19 vaccines are going to be, but it will be the same to call for an appointment.

For the community of Makkovik, Betty the DHSD public health nurse updated us for the influenza vaccines, the dates are set for Nov the 2nd – 3rd.
You can go to the DHSD office from 9am-11:30am and in the afternoon at 1:30-4pm. Then later in the evening @ 6-8pm.

Betty says for the Covid-Vaccinations, it is going to be help on Nov4th from 1-3pm and again on November 6th-10th at the same times .

Day 2 of the 2023 Fall Sports meet results

Today is Day 2 for the 2023 Fall Sports meet in Nain.

We spoke with Julie Dicker the Principal of the Jens Haven Memorial School.

Dicker says yesterday they held Table Tennis and Volleyball.

Today all athletes did their run around Nain, they will start archery and volleyball this afternoon, and Inuit games will be held tonight at the Jens Haven Memorial School gym.

Apology being planned to Nunatsiavut residential school survivors in Hopedale

Apology being planned to Nunatsiavut residential school survivors in Hopedale.

Nunatsiavut Government says no specific dates have been set for Hopedale or other Inuit communities.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey is set to deliver an apology to Nunatsiavut residential school survivors in November in Hopedale, according to a social media post by the Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Health and Social Development.

The Nunatsiavut Government says nothing has been confirmed, including the dates of the apology or details of any potential apologies in other Inuit communities.

In the post, the department said Furey was considering the first few days of November for the apology.

The post was later deleted, replaced by a version that made no mention of potential dates.

The department said a community meeting will be held Thursday night to discuss details on who would accept the apology in Hopedale.

The Nunatsiavut government’s Department of Health and Social Development updated a Facebook post to remove the suggestion of the first few days of November being considered for the apology.

The apology to Nunatsiavut survivors in Hopedale would be the second this fall.

Nunatsiavut Governments Archaeology Department is accepting applications to visit the Rooms in St. John’s

The Nunatsiavut Governments Archaeology Department is accepting applications until Monday October 16th, 2023 for an opportunity to visit the Rooms in St. John’s.

This opportunity is for anyone who has an interest in Museum Studies, Nunatsiavut History and 3D Scanning.

This is an all expense paid event to explore in all three areas.

There will be a half day workshop that will include: a tour of the Rooms, have a behind scenes chance to view the museum vaults and its collection, to get an introduction to museum exhibits and the care and safekeeping of collections, help select interesting items from Nunatsiavut in the museum’s collection for 3D scanning, and to learn the basics of digitizing museum objects with a 3D scanner and try scanning yourself.

You’ll be covered for travel to and within St. John’s, accommodations and per diems for meals, and an honorarium of $200 per day.

This trip will take place in November or early December, with the days at the rooms and travel for a total of about seven to nine days, the final dates still have to be determined.

Any Nunatsiavut beneficiary, 18 years and older may apply.

We spoke with Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator with the Nunatsiavut Government.

Are you a Nunatsiavut beneficiary looking to enhance your Inuttitut skills? Join Nicholas and Vanessa Flowers for 10 weeks of Inuttitut learning in Nunatsiavummiutitut.

After having taught online Inuttut lessons this past Spring/Summer, Vanessa and Nicholas are excited to again be offering Intermediate Lessons – Part 1 during Fall 2023.

Both recent graduates of the Aurniarvik Program at Pirurvik in Iqaluit, Nicholas and Vanessa are again excited to share with Nunatsiavummiut what they’ve learned during their time in their program.

In these Intermediate level lessons, Nicholas and Vanessa will be teaching Inuttitut in a similar way that they were taught, following lessons posted on Tusaalanga.ca.

This program is offered to Nunatsiavut beneficiaries who are 18 years and older and for people who already speak intermediate Inuktitut.

The IPN program offers support and assistance to Indigenous/clients who are referred to St. Johns NL for medical treatments.

The support and services that are provided for Eastern health care providers are.
– Navigation to appointments.
-Arranging interpretative services for Inuit.
-Assistance to access meals, transportation, accommodations, medical supplies and discharge planning.
-Liaising with internal and external agencies.
– Education and information sharing.
