Take Back The Night Event

September is recognized across Canada for Take Back the Night activities.

These activities, including rallies, marches, and candlelight vigils, are designed to raise the awareness of safety issues for women and children.

And to protest the harassment, sexual abuse, and assaults experienced by many women and children in our society.

In particular, Take Back the Night is about women reclaiming the right to be free of violence and to be able to walk without fear, particularly at night.

We spoke with Nicole Dicker, the Executive Director for the Nain Safe House.

She says the Nain Safe House and the Department of Health and Social Development will be holding a poster and lantern making this Monday September 15 from 1 to 2 pm at the DHSD building.

This year’s guest speakers will be Roxanne Andersen, who will be representing the youth, Rutie Lampe and the Nain RCMP.

Dicker says a planning committee member with the Child Youth and Family Services is taking part this year.

The planning committee member is hoping to attend the Jens Haven Memorial School to show and learn what Take Back the Night means for young women in our community.

The newly elected AngajukKak, Joe Dicker, will also be present to sign a proclamation declaring sexual violence awareness week in Nain.

Dicker says the Take Back the Night event will take place on September 19 at 8pm at the Nain Safe House.
